A brief description of ObjectWeb Ring

The goal of the rings which are part of ObjectWeb Ring is to federate the work regarding technical and pedagogical documentation related to Open Source middleware.

What is middleware ? It might be a software, a tool, a technology, a language that intends to make the development and usage of professionnal data processing solutions easier.

Why Open Source middleware ? Middleware is nowadays a key element of data processing systems. In order to avoid that only a few private actors control this element, many projects decided to embrace the emerging Open Source middleware initiative.

Technical documentation and training material... leading to a better understanding of middleware concepts and components. Those documents might be related to subjects such as:

  • technologies (RMI, EJB, Servlet/JSP, PHP, CORBA, JMS, JINI, J2ME, OSGi, JavaCard, PKI ...),
  • languages, frameworks and methods (UML, Java, C#, SQL, Perl, XML, XSLT ...),
  • plateforms (JOnAS, Jonathan, JORAM, Apache, Tomcat, Jetty, MySQL, McKoi,  ...),
  • tools (ANT, JUnit, CVS, JavaNCSS, Doxygen, OpenSSL, SSH ...).

Target audience

Every person who is interested in middleware might be interested in this ring, especially:

  • every user, or potential user of middleware components,
  • software developers, and people involved in professionnal activities related to the middleware area,
  • computer science teachers,
  • computer science students.

What kind of information does the ring contain ?

This ring gathers various Web sites containing training material that may help to a better understand middleware components and technical documentations to make Open Source software usage easier.

For instance you can find:

  • teaching materials (slides, exams, handouts, projects, ...),
  • tutorials,
  • open source software documentation and code walkthrough (see for example Jonathan, Fractal).

Ring principles

A webring gathers Web sites of similar content. Those Web sites are linked together using a navigation banner. Each site is indexed in a search engine using the meta-data provided during the submission process. You can search the sites of a ring using the search engine located on the ring home page (this page).

On the navigation banner, several buttons allow you to browse the various sites of the ring. The figure below shows the various navigation possibilities provided by the banner.

How to contribute to the ring ?

Anybody can contribute to the ring. You just have to own a website that hosts technical documentations, projects, courses, exams, handouts, tutorials, etc related to middleware.

Before submitting your Web site to the ring, we advise you get used to the navigation banner to understand the underlying concepts. The submission process rely on referencing your site in the ring but also on adding the navigation banner to your site. Once your submission aproved by the modarator of the ring, your site will be added in list of sites that are part of the ring, it will be accessible using the search engine and from the navigation banner of the sites around.

Here is how to proceed:

  1. To reference you Web site fill the following information in the form:
    • A Title and a short Description that will appear in the search results list.
    • Some Key Words as well as theSite URL so that your site will be indexed in the search engine.
    • A Site ID and a Password for administration.
    • Your Name and Email so that you will be notified by email if your submission is aproved.
  2. Add the navigation banner to your web page.
    • The ring engine automatically generates the HTML code of the navigation banner. This code is available from the admin interface of your site.
    • The ring engine does not provide any tool to insert the HTML code to your web page. You have to do this operation by hand using your favorite editor.
  3. Wait for the notification of acceptance from the ring moderator that will indicate that your site is now part of the ring.
    • Once your site is part of the ring, check that it works correctly using the "next" and "previous" links from the navigation banner of the sites around yours.
    • You can edit the information and view the stats related to your site from the admin interface.
